Tips and Tricks to Set a Good Example
As we grow and mold our characters, we do so with the influence of many outside factors. Nearly everyone has some person or other that they wanted to emulate as you grew up. What made them your choice, voluntarily or involuntarily, to be the biggest impact on your character? What are some ways to ensure that you are the best example for those who look up to you as a leader?
The most important factor (in my humble opinion), of how you react to outside stimuli, is your attitude toward the situation. For example, if I already have decided that I do not like jogging, my attitude towards it is closed off. Someone could suggest that we go for a nice jog, but my attitude toward jogging reflects my distaste. This makes it much less likely that I would join my friend on the jog, and potentially miss out on a new hobby. By keeping an open mind and a positive attitude toward things, especially new things, I open a vast window to so much more in the world. It is important for you to do the same. When people look up to others, they watch their behavior, and pick up on attitudes. Be sure you do not project a negative attitude.
Even young children can pick up on negative attitudes and reflect them. Having a positive attitude affects how people interact with you as well. If you give off a vibe that you do not want to talk to anyone, often times that will be the case. Be open minded and excited about the world around you. Those looking up to you will do so as well. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something new that you love, or show someone else something they become passionate about!
Obey The Law
While it may seem obvious, it is important to obey the law. As a leader and a role model, clearly doing something illegal is not suggested. Even if you think you can get away with small things that may go under the radar, don’t do it. There are a few reasons why even the smallest things are negative impacts on those looking up to you. First, you can get arrested for breaking the law. The consequences for this can include fines, jail time, or prison. If you are in jail, how will you be able to mentor someone else, much less set the example?
Your behaviors relay more than just consequences to others. When you choose to do the wrong thing, you give it your approval. Those who look up to you, see that you are fine with a certain behavior, then emulate it. This slippery slope often leads to a life of repeat offenders. Why not show your pupil good patterns and behaviors? If they already emulate your behavior, what better way to improve their character than doing good deeds? They will follow your example, bringing positive to those around them.
Treat Others With Respect
Another seemingly self-explanatory point. However, in today’s increasingly dangerous and violent world, many people fail to treat others with respect. School violence is on the rise, as well as other violent crimes and assaults. Police violence is at an all time high, and racial tensions in the country are not at a healthy level. By teaching your pupils to respect each other and not escalate situations, you can potentially save a life. Not only would you save a life by potentially avoiding an altercation, but you can save a life in a different way. You could save a life by sending them on the right path of character. What if you influence the next person who changes the world for good? By being a good example for someone else growing up, you can give them the tools and insight they need to become the best person they can, and make the most positive impact on the people around them.
Treat Yourself With Respect
While this article covers being a good role model for others, one would not expect self love to be an example. This could not be further from the truth. If you cannot or do not take care of your own well-being, how could you be able to take care of others? By eating healthy, staying fit in some capacity, and maintaining your mental health, you show your pupils that you care about your own life as well. A smarter, stronger you is most capable of helping others. All of the behaviors that reflect onto your own character, are able to be picked up by someone else. In summary, you must focus on your own behaviors and actions, being the best all around person you can, in order to hopefully influence your pupils to do the same.
