What Makes Barstool Sports So Great?
If you haven’t heard of Barstool Sports, then you should get out from under your rock, get on the internet, and look them up. They are internet sensations, known for crude humor, blogs and their ability to keep up with sports and have a blast doing so. These guys are entertainers for sports fans, athletes, gambling degenerates and really anyone who can take a joke without getting their panties in a wad. In addition to this, they have grown to a level that they have specific bloggers for each sport. They have several talk shows and podcasts. Barstool records almost everything they do while they travel so you can live the experience with them. If you don’t like certain aspects of what they do, you can only follow the parts you want. Let’s look at some of the talent that has lifts this brand from the above the others.
Dave Portnoy is the founder of Barstool Sports. He is a businessman, blogger, podcast host and pop culture star. Portnoy is also known by his internet name, “El Presidente” and “El Pres.” Dave is the mastermind behind the concept of bringing humor into mainstream sports entertainment in a way that ESPN couldn’t. He also does video blogs at pizza places across the country and reviews different pizzas. One bite, everybody knows the rules. He is popularly known for being detained at the press conference for Super Bowl LIII. Pres and several others made fake press passes to get in. They recorded themselves asking some players wild questions and eventually getting kicked out. He was got a ban from the stadium, after which he still went to the game anyways. At half time he was escorted… actually carried, out of the game.
Pardon My Take
Better known by his nickname, “Big Cat,” Dan Katz is a co-host of the popular podcast, Pardon My Take. PFT Commentator, or just PFT for short, is the other host who’s real name is Eric Sollenberger. Upon the launch of Pardon My Take on February 28th, 2016, it grew quickly in popularity. By March 2nd, it was number one on iTunes in the United States and the next day it broke the top 40 for Canada’s iTunes. These guys were some of the original people to help follow Portnoy’s dream with Barstool. They travel all across the country and have a blast doing so. Now it’s rare to see Barstool footage that they haven’t had a part in or get referenced to.
Part of their growing internet presence stems from the ability to draw in big names for interviews, video shoots, and radio broadcasts. Most of these big names are more than just guests, they are fans. They have visited Dan Bilzerian’s house, had Blake Shelton in their office, and hung out with Zac Efron. Some big sports names featured in their shows include Jim Harbaugh, Sean McVay, Jarred Goff, Scott Van Pelt, and Matthew Dellavedova. Other famous people include Mark Wahlberg, Baker Mayfield, Kobe Bryant, and Terrell Owens. The list of people they have worked with is endless and is growing by the day.
Call Her Daddy
The Call Her Daddy Girls are one of the newest additions to Barstool Sports. Alexandra Cooper and Sofia Franklyn host this hilarious talk show. They speak on relationships, advice, and sex. These girls have little filter and talk about whatever pops into their head. They do video blogs about their life and almost remind you of a couple bitchy high school girls, but keep watching. It is pretty funny. They will take the topics that people are ashamed to speak about, and exploit themselves. In doing so, they give out advice to other women as well. They don’t do this as a giant joke, they are actually serious about what they are doing. This podcast is in a category of its own.
Rough and Rowdy
Rough and Rowdy is a pay-per-view style event that Barstool hosts a couple of times a year. This was originally an independent company that barstool chose to buy. Contestants sign up to get into a ring with some gloves on a duke it out boxing style. They are not professionals, these are average joes who swing wildly and tire easily. Often, employees at Barstool will match up against each other on the show. In addition to this, the winner receives a jacket, trophy and cash prizes. El Presidente has spoke about possibly expanding into a reality TV style following of the fighter before the fights. This is backyard boxing where you turn the dial up a few notches.
The Future of Barstool Sports
Barstool Sports thrives from controversy. In today’s day and age, there is no shortage of that. People will find a problem with almost anything. Ever heard of the phrase “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”? Barstool makes full use of this. Anytime that somebody has a problem with them, they blow it up and make their point and side of the story known. This draws a huge social media following. In addition it feeds in to the lifestyle that many people live today, getting their information from social media. If they make a few people mad, it does not bother them. Everything they do is tailored towards certain audiences. There are some audiences that they will never appeal to, and they are perfectly fine with that.
Whether it is having Nerf wars in the office, traveling across the country, or simply eating pizza, these guys and girls are just having fun. To top it off, they are making money in doing so. So love them or hate them, they are going to keep doing their thing and having a blast in the process.
