Are You a Taco Lover? Check Out These Best Places For Tacos In Grand Rapids, MI.
We have traveled far and wide… not really. We have ventured across Grand Rapids, however, and found the best tacos in town. It was a tough job. I mean who wants to go out and eat tacos? Of course someone has to do it. So after a few trips around town, we made a list of our favorites.
Tacos El Cuñado
This authentic Mexican restaurant is a staple of Grand Rapids. Visit one of their locations, or catch their food truck out and about. You won’t be disappointed. The first time I tried their food, they had the food truck set up for an event just outside of John Ball Zoo. The food was phenomenal. I got a tamale and a taco and both were great. They make their authentic tacos from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Tacos El Cuñado also has a variety of options including; chorizo, chicken, steak, pork and shrimp. They also have vegan options including tempeh, nopales, and rice and beans. They also serve quesadillas, burritos, and tortas. The prices are quite reasonable so stop in and check them out if you haven’t already.
If you are familiar with the Eastown area then you should know about Donkey Taqueria. They have a large selection of various tacos that people rave about. Don’t believe me? Just check out one of their many reviews from satisfied customers who can’t wait to go back. If you enjoy a nice cocktail with your tacos, this is the place to be. They have 150 different tequilas to chose from and a variety of hand crafted drinks that pair well with the tacos. They are priced reasonable at $3-$4 per taco. With the quality of the food, this is a bargain. Some of my favorites include Taco de Borrego, Taco de Cachete, and Taco al Pastor.
Char is a new restaurant that blends Asian flavors with Mexican tacos. Descriptions alone can not do this place justice, you just have to try it. They offer corn or flour tortillas, your choice of chicken, steak or shrimp, and a variety of toppings. The house made Kimchi slaw comes in mild or spicy and it is highly recommended. They also have a homemade yum-yum sauce and a sesame teriyaki drizzle. If you are like me and not sure what to try, just ask. They are more than happy to give you some suggestions.
I let one of the owners set up my meal for me. I told him to surprise me with what he thought was best. He chose one of each meat choice, corresponded with tortillas he chose, and the spicy Kimchi slaw with dressings on top. It was so delicious. I advise people to go there all the time. After giving Char a try, it is definitely one of my favorite taco places in Grand Rapids.
City Built Brewing Company
City Built is a has a very unique menu. The cuisine is Puerto Rican style with a fusion for tacos and street food. The owners decided to use their knowledge of Puerto Rican style cooking and combine it with fresh, local ingredients. Wrap this delicious combination into some warm tortillas and you have some infused tacos that are unique and delicious. To top it off, they even host game nights, trivia nights and speed euchre throughout the month. For beer lovers, they also brew their own craft beer here. They have a wide variety in different pricing tiers. If you like trying new things, then this is a must try place for something out of the ordinary.
El Granjero Mexican Grill
This authentic Mexican restaurant on the west side offers some of the best south-of-the-border food in Grand Rapids. They offer a variety of options, from nachos and tacos to soups and quesadillas. If you are looking for a good lunch, then check them out. They run lunch specials Monday through Friday for less than $10. Their tacos come in soft or hard shells, flour or corn, with a variety of fillings. Included with these are chicken, beef, steak, pork, and chorizo, along with veggies and cheese. This place fits in perfect on the west side culture, super friendly and welcoming.
Even though it is tucked away in a strip mall, don’t overlook El Arriero. Here, they focus on mixing fresh ingredients into authentic Mexican cuisine. This is emphasized not only in their tacos, but also in the burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, and more. Although there are plenty of options for Mexican food in Grand Rapids, this is one of the highest rated. They offer a variety of combo plates so you can try different tacos and see which ones are your favorite. Next time your hungry and heading down 28th street, stop in and try El Arriero, you will be glad you did.
