Grand Rapids Benefits Through The LEAD Program
In case you haven’t heard of it, Grand Rapids LEAD Program is the Leadership, Employment, Achievement, and Direction program. This program focuses on providing unique training and experiences in civic engagement and leadership to young people in the area. The goal of this is to translate into employability skills that can help students of the program find jobs. The Mayor’s 100 campaign has a goal to find 100 local businesses. The companies will partner with the city of Grand Rapids and provide jobs to for young people in the program. This program runs several sessions. The first of these, the summer session, allows those who are still in school to get involved full time when classes get out. Other sessions, that run full time, are designed for those who are already out of school. This program is operated by Our Community’s Children.
Some of the functions of this program include resume building and cover letter writing. Students will also learn interview techniques and tips, how to dress for success and manage stress on the job. The program provides field trips to local colleges and businesses as well. Financial literacy is taught to students to help them build budgets and manage their money. The program also hosts game nights to help build social skills and connections.
Our Community’s Children
The outline of this program began in January of 1995. when the Grand Rapids City Commission made a commitment. This commitment was focused on helping the youth to help build a better future for the city. By 1998, Our Community’s Children had partnered with the city commission to expand this program. It is the belief of this organization that families need a level of access. This access should be to education, training, day care, transportation and employment. With access to these, families can efficiently grow economically and with stability. This applies not only to the families, but to the children and communities as well.

- Placing high value in the active participation and voices of the youth.
- Building equitable opportunities is a fundamental basic to a proper society and future.
- Lifelong learning is important to a progressing global community.
Resolution and Standards:
All children should:
- Be wanted and cared for by a nurturing and mature adult.
- Receive appropriate and comprehensive prenatal care that is affordable, accessible, and sensitive to diverse cultural needs
- Be able to eat 3 nutritional meals each day
- Have clean clothing and shoes
- Have a home that is safe, clean and affordable
- Be able to access community support systems
- Be under adequate supervision at all times
- Have access to early childhood education
- Be able to learn life skills that develop into self-reliance, self-esteem, and self-respect
- Be able to learn from adults who demonstrate the understandings of diverse cultures and their sensitivities
- Have a guardian or parent that works in a setting where family is a priority
- Be around opportunities for support in a community of faith
- Have exposure to a positive and hopeful future
There are a few eligibility requirements for participation in this program. First, you must be age 15 through 24 at the start of your training program. In addition, you need to be a Grand Rapids resident, or attending college in the Greater Grand Rapids area. There is no education requirement to enter this program. You do not need to be attending college, or have a high school diploma to be eligible for this program. It is not necessary to have a GED or minimum GPA for eligibility either. There is a training stipend for those 18 to 24 years old, who qualify for the program. This training stipend may be up to $800 for qualified applicants.
To apply for this program, it is only necessary to have two main things. You need to be able to legally work in the United States. You also need to be able to commit to the entire length of the training and job placement. Mayor’s 100 Businesses
These local businesses have partnered with the City of Grand Rapids. This provides jobs for young people in high school, college, and other continuing education programs. This is a valuable interest in the future of the youth of West Michigan. These companies consist of both public and private sector jobs of many industries. They work together to support local learning and area families. Some of these industries include marketing, customer service, and investment management. Others are engineering, web design and development and more A few of the companies in this program are Fifth Third Bank, Gazelle Sports, John Ball Zoo, Pepsi, and Spectrum Health. This youth program is a great way to help the city improve and grow. Young adults are getting the chance to gain great skills and experience for their future. In addition, the local business partners help with keeping much of this talent within the community. This allows for the talent to build and grow.
