Apple Re-Introduces MagSafe For iPhone 12
Apple just unveiled the new iPhone 12 and it has everyone pumped up. But there’s one feature that stands out in particular. It’s not 5G, and it’s not the higher refresh rate screen. It’s MagSafe.
Do you remember back in 2006 when Apple released its first version of MagSafe on its Macbook Pro models?
If you remember buying a new Macbook Pro in 2006, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Those truly were the good ole’ days. When the only thing fun for most people was playing Tetris on their Blackberry. Or when your screaming children could run full speed through your Macbook Pro charging cable without leaving a garbled mess of computer parts on your floor.
What is MagSafe?
MagSafe is a charging technology in which the charger uses neodymium magnets to permit a quick disconnect between the cord and the Macbook so that if it’s pulled, the user doesn’t trip on the cable and potentially damage the computer. iPhone 12 doesn’t ship with the new MagSafe charger in-box, but it is available for order on Apple’s website. In this case, it’s located on the back of the phone. The new MagSafe magnetic charger is shaped kind of like a “puck” and it automatically magnetizes to the back of the device without any hassle. It also further decreases the risk of damage to the user’s device via its charging port through the stress of traditional charging.
Apple MagSafe technology was a highly sought after feature for Apple users. It was also one of the major selling points for Macbook Pro users from 2006 to the release of the 2016 Macbook Pro. In 2017, however, Apple officially phased out the MagSafe feature with the release of the Macbook Air with USB-C charging and data transfer.
With the number of patents Apple has filed in its company’s history, it’s left many delighted to see them move back to technology so many customers preached as revolutionary for the better part of 10 years. With the overwhelming popularity and community support behind MagSafe in Macbooks from the past, if MagSafe gains enough traction and popularity in the new iPhones, maybe we’ll see the return of MagSafe to Macbooks in the near future. Cross your fingers!
MagSafe Might Be Bigger Deal Than 5G
iPhone MagSafe products have a lot of people really excited. For starters, iOS users finally get to enjoy “turbocharge” technology. This will put Apple’s charging tech on par with some Android flagship devices; a feature that Android users have been able to enjoy for a few years now.
It has many names but, Turbocharge or quick-charge technology is essentially the same as 15 Watt fast-charging solutions. It typically uses USB-C connections to achieve this. USB-C is the go-to for most producers because of the fast charging benefits, and super-fast data transfer speeds.
Unlike most charging technology, there won’t be a need to question whether you botch the placement of your phone on a wireless charging pad again. Or play hide and seek with your device’s charger port and cable in pitch-black darkness. And, if you’re like me, there’s something fascinating about watching your charger just snap into place like magic.
With a slew of different MagSafe products rolling off the assembly line as we speak, this opens even more doors for people looking to make their iPhone unique in all sorts of ways. MagSafe coupled with the release of iOS 14, which completely redesigned how we customize our home screens, will also give iPhone users another avenue to go off of.
A Portless iPhone?
One of these doors being a glimpse in the future of what charging your device could be like on a portless phone. Apple MagSafe may very well be the future of phones. With the deletion of the headphone jack (something that we’ve already started seeing move out of product lines), that future may be here sooner than we think. It may be the catalyst for major device producers like Google, and Samsung to move in this direction soon as well
So, why does this have so many people hyped up? Unlike 5G, there’s no need to wait for the technology to come to you. You can grasp all the phenomenal benefits of MagSafe on launch day, no matter if you live in New York City, or Gary, Indiana.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of owning a designated case to provide a kickstand for your phone, act as a wallet, or add a fish eye lens to your camera, MagSafe would allow these features to be easily exchanged. This means that your phone’s charging capabilities wouldn’t be limited to a case not being able to wirelessly charge your phone, or provide new features such as a wide-angle or fish eye camera lens. No more having to buy a special case for everything – amazing!
