It’s Date Night! | Great Date Ideas For Any Budget
Grand Rapids has some of the best activities and adventures for you and your significant other in the state! No matter what your budget for date night is, we have compiled a list of fun things to do. From downtown, to the outskirts and surrounding neighborhoods, Grand Rapids has so much to offer. Check out this simple, yet refined, list of some great ideas for you and your significant other to enjoy the city with. This list ranges from dinner, to movies, to arts and nightlife all over Grand Rapids.
Dinner & Drinks
As Beer City USA, you are guaranteed to find a brewery in the area. Some of the most famous breweries in the city include: Founders, New Holland, Grand Rapids Brewing Company, Atwater, Mitten Brewing Co, and more. Each brewery has their own unique flavors for you and your date to try. Many of them have live music as well. Founders is well known for their live music and food. New Holland has boot night on Wednesdays, where you get a boot shaped glass filled for cheap. Grand Rapids brewing company has fun free games in their back game room such as Mario Kart, and shuffleboard. Make it a night, and try a beer tour! Make sure you get a designated driver though.
Fun and Games
If you are looking for something fun to do on your date, such as go-karts, look no further! Craigs Cruiser’s is located just south of the city, and has go-karts, arcade games, batting cages, and now even a zip line! Let out your inner kid with the lazer-tag maze, and have some pizza in the cafeteria! For a more adult arcade and gaming experience, try Dave and Buster’s. There, you can enjoy arcade games, skeeball, and the classics, all while having a beer! Pyramid Scheme has tons of pinball machines to enjoy and converse over, as well.
For those looking for more active dates, fret not! If you feel like playing some paintball, head over to T.C Paintball for some run and gun fun. If you want to test your hand at throwing an axe, Target Axe Throwing is the perfect place to go. They offer lanes and free instruction for those learning, while providing a safe and fun environment. Fowling is on the rise in popularity as well. The Fowling Warehouse has a huge area for you and your date to play a hybrid of football and bowling, while having a beer and a great time!
Arts and Entertainment
Looking for something a little more chill? Take your date to Wine and Canvas for a more relaxed night as you drink wine, and paint along with their expert instructors. You get to take home your artwork too! Usually this costs around $35, so it won’t break the bank. There are multiple escape rooms around the city if you want to participate in some cooperative puzzle solving as well! Trivia nights can be found any night of the week at various bars, along with karaoke to sweep your date off their feet!
For a peaceful, yet inquisitive date, try one of the many museums in the city, or the John Ball Zoo! Thursday nights, you can get free entry into the Grand Rapids Art Museum, so keep that in mind. Frederick Meijer Gardens is the second most popular art attraction in Michigan and one of the top 100 in the world. With a new $14 million expansion on the way, you might want to check it out!
Concerts and Live Music
Live music can be found all over the city, with the largest venue being Van Andel Arena. Some of the biggest names in entertainment play here, as well as the Grand Rapids Griffins, if you like hockey. Other popular concert venues around the city are: 20 Monroe Live, The Intersection, Devos Place, The Stache, and Frederick Meijer Gardens. If you want a more intimate experience with the music, try one of the local bars and breweries that host live shows. Founder’s has live music on Thursdays, as well as Billy’s on Fridays and Saturdays.
Looking to dance? Check out Stella’s on the weekends, as well as the BOB, Tavern on the Square, Billy’s on any night of the week, the Woods, and more. On Wednesdays Mojos Dueling Piano Bar has dancing as well and is a popular spot because of the multiple floors. On the first level, there are two dueling pianos, and on the second floor, the dance floor is packed and there is another bar. Thursdays see Tavern and Gardella’s as busy, and going into the weekend, you can find fun and dancing at most any bat.
If you are looking for a nice place to take your date that doesn’t break the bank, yet still is delicious and relatively personal, try Brick and Porter. They have fantastic food, a quaint atmosphere, and no dress code. If you want to go all out and sit atop the city with your love, try Cygnus 27. (Currently closed do to the Amway update). While pricey, you cannot beat the view of the city and the quality of the atmosphere and food. Other higher end restaurants include Butcher’s Union, The Chop House, and Leo’s. Other nice, but relatively inexpensive restaurants such as 40 Acres, Carolina Low country Kitchen, Donkey Taqueria, and New Holland are also fantastic places for a date. Be sure to check their hours to avoid too long of a wait!
