The 10 Websites In The United States With The Highest Traffic
These are the the websites that get the most visitors each day in the United States. You can guess a few of them, but there are some on here that I found surprising. You can visit alexa.com to view the full list that I gathered my information from.
This is a no-brainer. Google dominates in search traffic, with a whopping 92.62% of all searches in the world on Google. The next closest is Bing with a mere 2.51% of search traffic. Google processes over 3.5 billion searches each day, with hundreds of billions of pages in their indexing queues. It doesn’t cost anything to index your page on Google search results, but the quickest way to shop up at the top of the list is to pay them fro advertisements. Over 84% of Google’s revenue comes from their ad business.
Need to learn how to do something? You have probably already searched Google. For most people, visual learning is the easiest way to learn, hence YouTube being the number two website in the United States. This video sharing platform features everything from product reviews and educational videos to funny and trending clips. No surprise that YouTube is a subsidiary of Google, adding to their massive web presence.
With the fall of MySpace, Facebook took over the social media gap that so many people can’t, or won’t, live without. Facebook now operates as much more than just a place to connect with family and friends. Theres are sections for businesses and events as well. You can even shop on Facebook, either by browsing private listings, similar to Craigslist, or by shopping online stores in the Facebook Shop.
It is no surprise that Amazon is towards the top of this list. The focus on the customer, through fast shipping, low prices, and great customer service puts Amazon a notch above of ecommerce stores. Just 24 years ago, this company was a bookstore, under operation in the garage of Jeff Bezos. Now this company is one of the largest in the world, with several subsidiary companies working under the brand. Whether you use Zappos, IMDB, Whole Foods, or Audible, you are supporting the Amazon brand.
Reddit is an online information source that consists of information that users submit. There are sections, known as subreddits dividing the page into different categories. Users can submit images, links, and text to answer questions and share information. Much of the content on here is relevant to social movements and trending topics. If you are looking for some useful information, or just a good laugh, you will find it on Reddit.
Yahoo is not quite the internet power-house that it was in the early 2000’s, but they are not out of the game. They may not generate the volume of search that they have in the past, but they have a vast amount of other content that draws users in. They have everything from fantasy sports and news sources, to their email and weather services. I am curious to see what they do in the following years to maintain a top status in a constantly changing digital market.
Wikipedia is a source of knowledge on just about anything. This site operates on the basis of user content that comes from credible sources. Most of this content is written from a third party point of view, without bias or favoritism. Anyone can edit a wikipedia page, but the pages are under constant review and irrelevant and incorrect information is taken out often. This site operates as a non-profit and mostly runs on donations.
Twitter is a social media platform that operates on the basis of microblogs and social sharing. There are over 330 million active users each month, and over 1.3 billion accounts on Twitter. Twitter is a great platform to stay up-to-date with trending information, as well as keep up on what is going on with people you follow. Although twitter did not invent the hashtag (#), they have made its use popular as a tie-in to categories and features that fit a tweet.
Instagram has become on of the most widely used social media platforms for today’s youth. This platform began for iOS users in 2010, and has shown tremendous growth since then. Instagram works through the uploading and sharing of images and videos. Facebook owns Instagram, after a purchase in 2012 for around $1 billion in stock and cash. Now, many influencers make money on instagram, by gathering a large number of followers, and then posting with promoted products and referencing other people to generate user interest.
Ebay is an online market place where people can buy and sell products across the world. Before Amazon, this was the most popular online shopping center. You can purchase things new or used, through either an auction style format, or at a set “buy it now” price. Items are typically for sale for a set period of time before the post is taken down, keeping relevant items in constant rotation. Sellers pay a fee for posting their items, but it is usually worth the cost due to the volume of the audience.
What does this information tell us about our society? That we are obsesses with social influence and shopping? That sounds about right to me. Information is also another driving factor in our searches. Either way, as a whole, the United States spends a lot of time on the internet.
